Tune In -- Remember that Velvet Underground song "Rock and Roll"? A young girl, growing up in the radio wasteland of America, discovers a whole new world when she tunes in a New York station:


Then one fine mornin' she puts on a New York station / She couldn't believe what she heard at all / She started dancin' to that fine fine music / You know her life was saved by rock 'n' roll.


Listeners who've been tuning into Spokane's new community radio station KYRS these past few Monday nights are finding a similar mind-expanding experience. "Random Access," which runs from 8-10 pm every Monday night, proudly delivers tunage you're not gonna hear on anywhere else. Pavement, Sleater Kinney, Ted Leo, Big Star and the Ramones are just a few of the audio delights offered by hosts Mike and Dan, with the occasional Queen or Simon and Garfunkel thrown in just to keep things appropriately random.





Art News -- Christmas has come a few weeks early for Spokane's two art museums. The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture (the MAC) has just been awarded a $500,000 challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities -- provided they raise $1.5 million on their own. And over at Gonzaga, the Jundt has just received a gift from the private collection of Norman and Esther Bolker that includes three Rembrandt prints. Congratulations!





From Beyond -- Sometimes the best advice can't be obtained from people who are living. Bonnie Whiting, of Angel Networks, is a psychic who claims to communicate with those who have "crossed over." When people want to speak to their loved ones (the deceased ones), Whiting serves as the middlewoman, communicating with those "guides" and passing their advice onto the inquirer.


Kathy Pollard, a mentee of Whiting's, says that since she began communicating with her guides, she's been able to live her life more fully and happily.


"Bonnie's got some good nuts and bolts for following (your) spiritual path," she says.


Whiting will conduct psychic investigations and intuitive connections on Dec. 19 at 6:30 pm in Coeur d'Alene's Fort Sherman Chapel. Tickets, available at the door, are $10.
