A Thousand Words -- Speaking of Jess Walter's new book, anybody had a chance yet to check out the cool front cover? (See it for yourself on page 26.) That hazy, enigmatic photograph (of a bullet-riddled chair and the abandoned shells of several vehicles) is the work of our very own editorial art coordinator, Amy Sinisterra. In addition to her extensive photography work for us, Sinisterra is an artist in her own right and has had several shows in the area. The image that was used for Land of the Blind first appeared in the "Amy2" show at Bitters Studio in October, and was taken with a plastic Holga camera. Congrats, Amy!





Vat of Confusion -- About a month ago when we were writing up the venues for the Visual Arts Tour, we mentioned that there was no Rally in the Alley on the winter leg of the V.A.T. We were just doing that to differentiate the February V.A.T. from the October V.A.T., but some of the venues on West First took that to mean that we were announcing no Rally in the Alley next year. For anyone who was wondering, there WILL be a Rally in the Alley next fall, and it WILL be in its usual spot near Far West Billiards, Bitters and the Brooklyn Deli. Sorry to inadvertently disseminate misinformation!





A Reading Odyssey -- If you took part in the first "Spokane is Reading" event, featuring Kent Haruf's Plainsong, you know firsthand how inspiring it was to see so many people in one community reading and discussing the same book. The Spokane is Reading Committee has just announced that the book for 2003 will be Charles Frazier's Civil War novel Cold Mountain. It might be good timing to savor Frazier's langorous, hickory-smoked prose between now and October (the official "Spokane is Reading" month). The film, directed by Anthony Minghella and starring Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger, Jude Law, Donald Sutherland, Kathy Bates, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Giovanni Ribisi, Natalie Portman and Jack White of the White Stripes (whew, we don't remember there being this many characters in the book), is set to be released in December.





Break Like the Wind... -- And speaking of movies, here in the Buzz Bin we have a new reason to live. We've been hearing rumors of a new movie from Christopher Guest and company -- who brought us This is Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show. This weekend, we finally saw a trailer. Scheduled to open in selected cities on April 16, A Mighty Wind gives the Spinal Tap treatment to folk music. A lot of the same faces are back, including Parker Posey, Fred Willard and Bob Balaban, but we especially like Eugene Levy as a dazed and confused Jerry Garcia-type character. Yee haw!
