In case you haven't heard, Tryst (one of the best places in town to get your Internet jones and your coffee jones satisfied at the same time) is now The Spike. Andrew Baucom of Art by Yourself and visual artist Patrick Walsh took over about a month ago with the shared goal of providing a "cultural hub for artists, art patrons, business people and students who frequent the neighborhood." Located in the heart of Railside Center (122 S. Monroe St., to be exact), The Spike offers 100% Fair Trade Organic juice and coffee drinks, nice long hours (7 o'clock in the morning until midnight -- yeah!), rotating visual art exhibits, live music, board games, a private meeting room and of course, wireless high-speed Internet access.


The Spike is having its grand opening this Saturday night at 7 pm with live music, grub and grog, and plenty of good times. Go check 'em out! Call: 838-1614





Pirouette Professionally


If you're a big fan of ballet -- and not just anything that calls itself ballet and wears a tutu -- you can't miss the debut of Spokane's new professional company, Ballet Spokane, this Saturday night at the Met. Artistic Director Janet Wilder (who also helms the Academy of Dance) envisions a company with six to eight professional resident dancers a year, visiting guest artists, and a repertoire of both classics and new choreography. Ballet Spokane already has one principal dancer for the 2003-2004 season in Kari Jensen, who will be introduced to Spokane audiences at the Gala Debut this weekend. Jensen trained at the Marin, Royal Winnipeg and San Francisco ballet schools, and has worked with the Richmond Ballet. The weekend debut includes a reception at 7:30 pm, catered by the Lone Canary Winery, Fotheringham House and Mi Casa, with an 8 pm performance. Tickets are $10. Call: 325-SEAT.





Get Your Kicks...


Route 66, the pre-Interstate that "winds from Chicago to L.A." for 2,400 miles (even if it did last only from 1926 to 1978) has inspired Roger Bean (The Marvelous Wonderettes) to write a 32-song musical revue in its honor. Featuring four guys dressed as old-time gas station attendants, then as cowboys, then as California beach bums, the songs at the Lake City Playhouse (Sept. 5-20), set alongside a giant radio dial, will improve your knowledge of geography: "King of the Road," "Long Tall Texan," "The Little Old Lady from Pasadena" and more.
