Beyond Science Fiction -- Anybody growing up in the early '80s probably remembers the illicit allure of Heavy Metal. Part sci-fi horror film, part animated rock opera and sung by the likes of Sammy Hagar, Journey, Don Felder, Stevie Nicks and Black Sabbath, it was the kind of movie your stoner cousins would endlessly quote/deconstruct/give homage to with bad copycat drawings of heavy metal chicks riding prehistoric heavy metal sparrows. Whoa, dude....

North Idaho College is showing Heavy Metal, but not that one. The Heavy Metal they're showing is a real life documentary that is less midnight movie and more "movie-that-keeps-you-awake-all-night." University of Idaho professor and filmmaker Hans Rosenwinkel spent close to two years documenting the Bunker Hill Superfund site and the efforts of ordinary citizens to get beyond the area's legacy of silver, lead and zinc mining and the resulting water pollution, ecological damage and controversial EPA involvement. Rosenwinkel's Heavy Metal even has rock music, courtesy of San Francisco's Lanterna and the Mines (apropos, no?) from Seattle. Heavy Metal will be shown at NIC's Todd Lecture Hall in Coeur d'Alene. For more information, call the Silver Valley Community Resource Center at (208) 784-8891 or e-mail them at [email protected].

Speaking of Heavy Metal... -- We had a good time visiting the Farm Chicks Antique Show in Fairfield this weekend. In addition to stuffing ourselves on fresh cinnamon rolls and Shop coffee, it was a trip down memory lane for some Buzz Binners -- but even more so for one Buzz Bin parent who spotted the exact same stroller she found herself in on many a late 1940s afternoon. It made us glad we grew up in the relative comfort of the '70s and '80s - this thing was made completely of metal and resembled an old push-wheel lawn mower more than anything you'd want to put your kid in. No vinyl. No plastic. But more (possibly lead-based) off-white paint than you can even imagine. Scary! Sorry, Mom

Weird Web Site of the Week: www.hasidicreggae.com -- You just can't make this stuff up. Matisyahu is the stage name of 20-something musician Matthew Miller, a Hasidic Jew from New York. He looks like a lot of other Hasidic Jews - bushy beard, skullcap, itchy woolen trousers. But here's the difference: dude can bring it. He's not your typical Jewish performer, keening in Hebrew or smashing out klezmer. This guy's straight from the streets - beat-boxing, rapping, spitting out rhymes and lines with the urgency of Eminem or Wyclef. And all in those old-school trousers. It's like watching your rabbi interrupt a bar mitzvah to break-dance on the floor. Check it out for yourself.
