Re: “Why House of Charity refuses to feed most panhandlers

The opposite of addiction is connection...so we should not be excluding people from help for any reason. Those who struggle with addiction often have no hope to deal with the pains of life and no belief in their ability. If we give them connection to society and individuals they can learn to take care of themselves. Instrad of being told by this guy that they are bad and only want the drugs. By excluding people based on actions you are telling them they have no hope. Give pwople the actual opportunity to repair their lives. Give them real support. Shelters have some problems, too many rules, violence, discrimination. And the people who run them while sometimes actually compassionate and caring are loosing their own battle by overcontroling those they want to help. A religious institution that wants to help homeless should not restrict based on religious laws. This guy is basically saying in this interview watch out for the bad ones. Why do we need to reinforce the stigma of homelessness? One accident, one bad choice, we are all this close to loosing everything at some point. Everyone needs connection to get through this stuff. I will not stop helping people who ask or who look like they need it. That's how we'll stop homelessness. Not to mention we need apartments for people downtown, near their services, not controlled by a religious group. Like the Right To Dream Too Camp in downtown Portland (R2D2)
