A Spokane sports icon, ex-pro boxer Rick Welliver, dreams of reviving the Silver Valley’s boxing culture of decades past. Opportunities for kids outside of school are few in the rural towns of this North Idaho valley — there’s more trouble than good found by too many local youth — but Welliver wants to change that. And it’s through the very physical sport of boxing that he hopes to show these kids their potential for success both inside and outside the ring. This Saturday, catch some of Welliver’s boxers swinging fists at 5,800 feet, atop Silver Mountain, during an amateur event that serves as a fundraiser to support the mission of Silver Valley Boxing Club.
