Much of the dialogue on immigrants and immigrant labor is about them, not from them. First Time Home addresses that disparity, offering the perspective of four young, second-generation immigrants and descendants of the Triqui culture of western Oaxaca who live in the U.S. The youth — Esmirna Librado, Noemi Librado Sanchez, Esmeralda Ventura, Heriberto Venturo — shot all the footage beginning in 2016. The film, which debuted in 2021, explores the young adults’ first trip from California and Washington to Mexico, which constitutes a different sense of “home.” Produced by Spokane native Seth M. Holmes, a Lewis & Clark High School graduate who’s now a medical doctor and anthropology professor at University of Southern California, First Time Home has won numerous awards including a 2022 Spotlight Film Award gold medal.
