Functional Berry Basket Class

Berry baskets are small baskets woven from spruce root or cedar bark, often with a loose or open weave. Their technique and materials differ from area to area but are ubiquitous along the entire Northwest Coast and Alaska. During this special workshop, tribal artist Paul Rowley, who grew up in Alaska and is of the Haida and Tlingit tribes, introduces students to cedar preparation and the fundamentals of plaiting and twinning. Students also create a functional berry basket from the inner layer of western red cedar bark.
