Re: “Shut Down?

I understand the need to run on a balanced budget but I´m endlessly frustrated when the solution to a short fall in the budget is to raise taxes and cut funding. Loss of the MAC will result in one less reason for Spokane tourism bringing in less revenue into the area. Loss of history by making harder for people to see examples of our unique culture. Loss of jobs at a time when the average time people spend finding work is over 8 months.
Where in Spokane can these employees who will be losing their jobs be reabsorbed into the local economy? Sure the state is saving money on paying their ages but the savings will be lessened because they will need unemployment insurace payments, DSHS benefits (such as food stamps), and more. The State will also lose money on the taxes as the now unemployed people would have less money to spend on things that aren´t as nessicary as food, housing, and bills.
It would be likely events in Brownes Addition like ArtFest would also suffer because the MACs involvement wouldn´t exist anymore. If the state won´t fund the MAC then it should fall to the people of Spokane to keep it open. I know we can´t afford in the city or county budget but if we lose the MAC we are losing a part of our history, ourselves, and our future.
