The swagger of a rock band, the twang of bluegrass, the soulful grit of old blues — the Portland duo Hillstomp gives you all of that in its rootsy sound. They call themselves punk-blues, which seems about right, considering they’re layered in the kind of sonic fuzz that you’d expect from either a garage-rock cassette or an old blues 78 record. Henry Kammerer and John Johnson also bring banjo and downhome percussion instruments into the fray, and the songs from their recent album Monster Receiver alternate between late-night party atmospheres and gentle harmonies. And, yes, you’ll find yourself stomping along.
