Re: “Tragedy of John Wayne

My husband and I are long-time mountain bikers that enjoy exploring trails both in Canada and the US including bike packing. We are regular visitors to Washington State. We've done the JWT section from North Bend to Vantage. It is a unique treasure and a legacy for future generations to have a route available to the public to explore the state at a scenic pace. British Columbia has a similar rail-trail in the Kettle Valley Railway that is immensely popular for bikers, hikers and horse riders. Rail trails not only support a healthy, recreational lifestyle, they provide an economic benefit through tourism for the small communities that lie along the route. Take a look at the towns that lie along the KVR in BC and you can see what they've done to support travellers, i.e. B&Bs, campsite, restaurants, historic sites, etc.

I hope WA state and the folks involved with the JWT assess this situation with facts and the greater good in mind. There are far more benefits to keeping the JWT open to recreation than in closing it. I look forward to the opportunity to complete the JWT route in its entirety.
