Mapping the World

The study of geography goes back to ancient times as scholars sought to understand the physical world around them. Though people already drew maps, the first modern atlas was Abraham Ortelius’ Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, first published in 1570. What made that volume unique was that the maps were uniform. Atlases often having a unifying theme, such as an atlas of a particular place, but many of these early atlases gathered maps of the entire world. Many atlases included text with descriptions of the land, people and animals from the areas described. Tue 1-8 pm, Wed-Sat 1-6 pm.
