The story of the Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens is one that never ceases to fascinate me. It’s truly like Spokane has its own version of the Secret Garden, that fictional oasis of the mesmerizing children’s book by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Built in the nineteen-aughts along a steep hillside on the edge of Spokane’s South Hill, the gardens were all but lost to time and the forces of nature until their remnants were discovered more than 20 years ago in the wake of Ice Storm ’96. The gardens reopened in 2007, after a decade-long restoration that recreated the terraced landscape as it would have looked more than 100 years ago. Take a stroll through the gardens this spring during one of three guided tours, which offer insight on the gardens’ history and the process to revive them.
