Re: “Big City Living

Spokane's downtown feels like a ghost town compared to Portland where I live. Without a real supermarket within walking distance, it is absurd to expect folks to live in downtown without a car. The triangle of blocks between Monroe, Riverside, and 1st would be ideal for residential highrises were it not for the Spokesman Review's many parcels of land filled with trucks. Current older apartments in that area are poorly renovated.

Re: “A peek at the $395 micro-apartments planned for the Ridpath

The keys to downtown living are accessible grocery stores that one can reach by foot.
Portland, where I live, has at least two. Rosauer´s is too far from Spokane´s central core.
The ill-conceived fire station west of the Maple Street bridge made matters worse. Perhaps a boutique market could be built in the still vacant lot sold to Wells by the fire department.
