Re: “Math's Long Division

Two major things:
1) change our school lunch program - get some actual REAL nutritious FOOD into our kids. It will help them, I promise! Get the stupid soda, garbage snack, etc. machines out of our schools! If we can cut down on the adhd/add/behavioral issues we´ll have more learning.
2) use a different approach/curriculum. The curriculum Dist 81 uses is not working for the majority of our students! On the other end of that, Saxon math is awesome and as a mom and teacher the kids, even those that are lower skill wise, thrive with it. Its explicitly taught, not explored. its a cyclical program meaning skills are revisited throughout the year to maintain mastery. We love it (and Horizons Math from AOP.com)
Additional:
- offer a quick 1 minute daily fact drill. Seriously helps, super quick, and motivating for most students! (this is a part of the Saxon Math program)
- up the movement and physical ed! Easy, natural ... get the blood pumping through our kids!
- Brain gym is a good resource for our schools
- get over the fact that skill grouping may offend. Let kids develop at their own pace by giving them the chance to master material at their own speed. If they are in the right learning target zone they will flourish!
