Centenarians Celebrate -- Mayor Jim West declared March 31 as the city's official Centenarian Day, and we must say that if there are more 100-year-old folks out there like Lenore Johnson, perhaps we should give them a whole year instead of just one day.


Johnson, who's 102 years old, received the Mayor's dedication at the city council meeting on Monday.


"I feel that I have been blessed by having most of my faculties remaining at my age," said Johnson, adding that none of her relatives had reached 100. "I didn't get this through heredity."


Nope. It sounds like she got it through activity.


"I've just joined a weight lifting class. I figure I don't have any muscle left and I need to get it back," said Johnson. "I also believe in walking. That is an activity you can do all your life and get great pleasure from."


Johnson got a well-deserved standing ovation.





Ganging Up -- Do you ever wonder when a bandana is more than just a bandana? Or when jeans are more of a statement than just a pair of pants? Or what that graffiti tag really means? Well, on Thursday, April 8, at 6:30 pm, COPS and Protecting Our Children are hosting their second annual conference on gangs. The event will be held at Lewis and Clark High School.


The conference is for adults only, because some of the material presented is unsuitable for children and teens. A panel of speakers from social service agencies, law enforcement and education will do special gang-related presentations and provide parents with tools to help their own children and the community as a whole.
