Re: “Why Spokane artists had to go to Missoula to show their edgy work

I guess we need to delve into the idea of "gallery." Is it a place where a person can show up and put whatever they want on the wall? Is it a place where contemporary art is championed? Is it a place where the artist in charge of the success/failure of his/her show? If that is the case, then Saranac Art Projects is a gallery. And we DO show work that includes violence, strife, nudes and more (so I think we'd take exception to the criticism that there aren't any places in Spokane that do so)! But we are a co-op, meaning that unlike the traditional "gallery," we run ourselves and in order for us to keep the doors open, we have a jurying process to try to ensure that the people who join the co-op are willing to do the work, help pay the rent, keep the floors clean, sit the gallery during gallery hours, be responsible about show dates, participate in the overall process and commit to being a vital part of the arts community. Some people may find fault with our business model, but it's a business model that's kept us going for seven years (and hopefully will keep us going for many more).
