Sordid Lives

The tagline says it all: “a black comedy about white trash.” Also, if the title of the Civic’s next Studio Theater production sounds familiar, it’s because there was a movie and then a TV adaptation of the partially autobiographical piece by Del Shores — he also wrote Daddy’s Dyin’: Who’s Got the Will?. Beloved for its eccentric comedy and depiction of the gay lifestyle, Sordid Lives centers around a family in a conservative, rural Texas town who are struggling to recover after the strange and tragic death of its matriarch, Peggy. Like many of the Civic’s Studio Theater shows, Sordid Lives doesn’t tread lightly, and this play is rated R. Directed by Lance Babbitt, the local cast of eccentric characters take audiences on a campy, over-the-top romp.
