Re: “The Real Rachel Dolezal

Sad story, no matter where you stand politically. There is no glee in pointing out publications like the Inlander provide fertile ground for those with a strong left lean...and when you stuff all your eggs in one basket, occasionally you're going to get burned. Dolezal turned out not to be the champion many, including the Inlander, thought, or hoped she was. The thing that bothers me most however, is how so many in Spokane seem to actually root for the finding of racism in our community/region. If 5 or 6 jack-booted nitwits march in Idaho...or a black (or not) person says they received hate mail or threats, the local and national press grab a giant brush and paint us all racist bigots. Many local journalists, including staff at the Inlander, appear more than willing to facilitate that lie by providing a welcome platform for those spreading such an idiotic and false gospel. I'm of the exact opposite opinion and believe Spokane residents are decidedly not racist and having lived in larger (so called, more progressive cities) we're far more open minded and fair on that scale than many other communities I've lived in.

Re: “What We Aren't

My wife and I began our married life 40 years ago in sleepy Eugene Oregon, moved to Portland, OKC, Dallas, Sacramento, and then Seattle, before spending the last 20 in Spokane. Along the way, we raised 4 boys (all of whom now live in Spokane). So we've had the small and big town experience(s) and for us at least, Spokane is/was the place we were looking for all along the way. Yes, we've watched our kids struggle to find good jobs, music, food, art, etc., but have also observed families/people in all the other places mentioned doing & saying similar things. I think many people in general tend to gaze over the fence and wonder what it might be like elsewhere, that's just part of the human experience. With determination, we've been able to forge decent careers/jobs here...and even helped bring some of the stuff we found a bit lacking in Spokane to town (art, music, culture, food) by opening a couple small eateries downtown. That experience has allowed us to get to know hundreds, if not thousands, of people who drive the core/heart of Spokane...and we simply couldn't imagine living anywhere else, wrinkles, quirks, and all...

Re: “Trail Mix — 10.25.12

I don´t think it´s as much the actual endorsements by media outlets or publications, as it is the predictabilty of which political stripe they prefer that´s most annoying to me. Any objective reader of the Inlander would instantly recognize the publication leans hard left, appealing mainly to the 18-35 demographic, and it´s clear no right leaning (or even slightly tipped) conservative would ever win its endorsement. That´s fine though, the owners of the pubication can support whomever they choose, certainly, but it throws a chilling dose of cold water on their "objectivity" and compromises the paper´s ability to be taken seriously on other issues/items routinely covered. In this town, the same holds true for the S/R, only perhaps leaning the other way, but just once I wish one of these publications would stun me by putting aside political "leans"...and instead endorse someone who may not fit their mold.
In the Inlander´s case (like many other younger voters) I really don´t think there was/is anything Obama could have done to "lose" the no "news" here. Oh well, thankfully it´ll all be over this time next week!

Re: “Street Corner Named Desire

As the owner of Stella's, I couldn't let this rather caustic note pass without comment. \r
We have nothing but respect for the prior owners, and I can attest to the fact Morgana (J-Walk) made some excellent goodies...having sampled them extensively. \r
Sorry you felt anyone was being thrown under a bus, because that certainly wasn't the intent...
