It’s Don Riefler’s first week on the job. And he’s already stoked.
The new educator at Mobius, the downtown Spokane children’s museum, is seeing some of his most beloved ideas — grounded in serious geekery — come to life this year as programming for an upcoming summer camp.
He’ll be heading a pretty awesome little camp called “Pop Science: Where Culture and Science Meet,” a camp for every type of geek imaginable.
After a day filled with Star Trek and Star Wars space nerdery, Riefler will transition into a kind of fantastical nerdery that’s far more socially acceptable than Klingon ears and Storm Trooper helmets ever were: Harry Potter.
Riefler says that campers will deconstruct one of J.K. Rowling’s most compelling inventions: the Invisibility Cloak.
They’ll talk about the concept of invisibility — and how it rears it head in everything from movies to comic books. It’s the ultimate superpower, and Riefler says there are lessons to be learned from the idea.
“We’ll be doing a lot of optics that day,” he says. “I think that’s the day we’re going to measure the speed of light as it moves through different medias, and imagine how an invisibility cloak might get made.”
Be still, nerds — it gets even better.
Day Four will deconstruct the best of all superpower comics: X-Men. Riefler will use Magneto’s powers to talk about magnets, and discuss Wolverine’s steel skeletal structure, among other X-Men powers, as a way to teach kids about genetics and mutation.
“I’m going to bring in my pet gecko that day to talk about how animals regenerate,” Riefler says. And by the end of that day, campers will be brainstorming their own superpowers.
The geekery gets spookier later in the week, when Riefler brings up the idea of a zombie apocalypse as a way of introducing microbiology and disease transmission to the campers.
“Once we talk about how would you avoid getting bit by a zombie … then we’re going to give them a chance to design their own zombie survivor compound,” he says. Campers will create zombie defense equipment and give it a test drive on some zombie heads. Fake ones, of course.
“It’s definitely a camp for geeks, but there are all sorts of different types of geeks,” Riefler says. “These days that’s not a dirty word anymore.”
Oh — and we’ve already asked: No, this camp is not open to adult nerds. Sad face.
