I’ll always have a soft spot for “In the Mood,” that instantly recognizable, big-band standard made famous by the Glenn Miller Orchestra back in 1939. It was the track one of my high school gymnastics floor exercises was set to, and thus the tune is eternally embedded into memory. Fun fact: “In the Mood” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame 50 years after its release, and is among the band’s 16 total record-breaking, No. 1 singles. While the group’s namesake leader’s time in the spotlight was brief — Miller’s plane disappeared over the English Channel in 1944 while traveling to entertain troops — his legacy lives on, and an orchestra performing Miller’s chart-topping arrangements continues touring today. Its 18 members stop next in Spokane for an evening sure to be filled with romantic nostalgia for an era long past.
