The Great Ceramic Revival

Clay is having a moment among contemporary artists. For the past decade or so, the earthy artistic medium has become increasingly popular, and the new show at Coeur d’Alene’s Art Spirit Gallery is giving the renewed interest its due with a new show curated by guest Peter Held, a ceramics expert who has spent decades exploring clay works throughout the Northwest and beyond. For this show opening Friday, Held procured clay works — primarily vessels, but also purely decorative pieces — from 20 of the region’s best clay artists. Their individual styles vary, Held says, but their collective work provides “a clay continuum spanning four decades of artistic excellence.”
