The Mountaintop

In the current era, as civil unrest seemingly begins to mirror the pivotal and often violent socio-economic changes of 1960s, it can become all the more important to look back at the lessons from that momentous decade. Audiences of Katori Hall’s award-winning play The Mountaintop, produced by L.A. Theatre Works, can do so as they take an imagined foray into the final hours of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life. The touring production, presented by Washington State University Performing Arts and the Office of Equity and Diversity, stops into Pullman for a two-night run as part of WSU’s annual MLK program. The fictional dialogue between the beloved civil rights leader and a motel maid just prior to his April 4, 1968, assassination carries The Mountaintop, ultimately delivering a heartfelt parable that serves Dr. King’s important legacy.
