Hidden behind upbeat-sounding and often humorous Sara Bareilles songs, Waitress is a story about finding love; not that tired, played-out romantic love you see in every show, but that deep self-love that takes time and courage to achieve. This musical follows Jenna, a waitress who bakes delicious pies to distract herself from her abusive relationship, as she struggles to find financial independence to give her baby and herself a better life. When she finally finds a pie-baking contest where the winner receives $20,000, Jenna, with the support of her friends, begins to slowly but surely plan her new life without her husband. Directed by Troy Nickerson and choreographed by Delaney Kahler, the crew at the Spokane Civic Theatre will stage this musical for the next month on the Margot and Robert Ogden Main Stage.
