Media Backlash -- As the events of the past six months have unfolded, with the United States and Great Britain going to war in Iraq over now-dubious pretenses, many citizens have believed the media has played a part. In not digging deeper into the reasons, some media outlets have taken a hit. Not London's The Guardian. Along with the BBC, The Guardian has been considered one of the English-speaking world's media outlets least likely to regurgitate the government line.


As a result, more Americans are going overseas to learn about the war. The Guardian claims that 2 million American readers are logging onto their Web site every month. Meanwhile, The Guardian is said to be exploring the idea of launching a version here in the States.





Best Eight Years of Your Life -- During our preparations for last week's College Issue, we came across some interesting facts. Now that many of the students of the Inland Northwest are safely back in class, we can share them.


Recent statistics from the Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Education show that adult students are the fastest growing educational demographic. Nearly 40 percent are 25 and older (with an average age of 30), and these numbers are steadily increasing. The enrollment of adult students is increasing faster than that of younger students. Students under 25 are projected to increase by only 4 percent, but those over 25, by 16 percent.


And Nellie Mae, the principal national clearinghouse for student loans, reports that 78 percent of college undergraduates use credit cards, which are often offered to them as part of their entrance packets. And the stats show that those students who use credit cards are not amateurs:


* 32 percent have four or more


* The average debt is $2,748


* 13 percent have credit card


debt between $3,000-$7,000


* Nine percent have credit card


debt higher than $7,000





Hear the Candidates -- Still trying to figure out who to vote for in the Spokane strong mayor election? Here's a list of some of the upcoming candidate forums:


Sept. 7: The KREM-KSPS debate will air on KREM-2 at 5 pm and at 7 pm on KSPS. (It will be rebroadcast on KSPS on Sept. 14 at 2 pm.)


Sept. 9: The South Side Senior Center will host the candidates for a 1 pm forum (with lunch available).


Sept. 10: A forum will be held at the Hotel Lusso at 7 pm.


Sept. 12: The Spokane Area Chamber of Commerce will host a forum after its breakfast meeting at 7:30 am at the downtown DoubleTree Hotel.


Sept. 14: FOX-28 will broadcast its mayoral debate at 6 pm. (It will be rebroadcast on Sept. 15 at 10 pm.)
