Sure, he was born Joseph Montgomery Fennel in Tulsa and has a shock of the reddest hair we've ever seen, but he's been making pilgrimages to Jamaica since he was 14, so his cred's impeccable. Joe's so Rasta, his Web site (josephisrael.com) has a transcription of some 1925 treatise entitled "Comfort for the Jews." He plays the Blvd on Friday.





... and then there were four. & r & Coretta Scott's coming off a month-long tour of the West (see last week's local music issue for them posted up in front of some $3.50-per-gallon gas), and they're set to play their first show back in Spokane. It'll also be their first show here without former front man Seth Woodward (aka Chelsea Seth, aka Chelsea Seth Woodward ...). The Chain Gang & r & It's normal to tour after releasing a new album, but what the Ditty Bops are doing is just crazy. Upon release of Moon Over the Freeway (5/23), the indie/flapper jazz duo began biking from L.A. to New York, playing 35 gigs along the way to promote cycling, clean air and healthy living. Though it's been done before (by Bicycle the Band), it doesn't make them any less bad-ass. And, yes, their asses will feel bad come August. Follow their progress at dittybops.com.
