Shoehorning It In -- Some weeks there are simply so many things going on that we can't fit them all in the paper. Thus, the Buzz Bin becomes auxiliary article space. Here are just a few more noteworthy events coming up in the next few weeks.
Jazz and Poetry in Motion -- If you haven't been over to the MAC to check out Jack Dollhausen's 30-year retrospective of his engaging, interactive pieces, here's an opportunity to do so. Poets Tod Marshall and Nance Van Winckel will be reading poetry that will no doubt excite the exhibit's considerable electronic circuitry. Jazz accompaniment comes from Brian Flick and friends. Be there (the MAC) next Wednesday, May 28, at 6 pm.
Guitar Guys -- They can do jazz. They can do prog rock. They can do classical. They can even do (oh, yeah) surf music. The California Guitar Trio is a triad of guitar-slung youths who can meld all these disparate styles together into an organic whole. Praised for their witty delivery and consummate craftsmanship, the Trio comes to the Met next Tuesday, May 27, at 7:30 pm. Check 'em out!
A Whitewash Job -- Spokane Children's Theater will visit Mark Twain Land with its production of Tom Sawyer at the Civic Theater from May 24-June 14. Director Jone Campbell-Bryan reports that the centerpiece of the show will be a choreographed number called "Lessons," much reworked by musical director Jeff Batdorf. In it, Tom (James Pendleton) flirts with Becky in the schoolroom, then plots with Huck to visit the cemetery. Smoky special effects "will make the graveyard seem eerie," says Campbell, and yes, Injun Joe (Stuart McKenzie) will make a suitably creepy appearance. Sounds like a good way to teach kids all about an American classic without their even knowing that "Lessons" are going on.
Duuuudde -- If you've been to The Matrix Reloaded like six or seven times already, you'll be into this next item. Starting June 6, you can see The Matrix Reloaded at the IMAX, where all the special effects and heart-stopping stunts can play out five stories high on the vast IMAX screen.
Here Before You Know It -- The Festival at Sandpoint might still seem a long ways off, but we guarantee the annual ten-day August music festival will be here before we know it. The Lettermen kick off the festival on Aug. 7, followed by the brassy funk of Tower of Power the next night. Aug. 9 is being heralded as Super Woman Saturday, with a double header of Karla Bonoff and Shawn Colvin.
