Staggering Genius -- Here in the Buzz Bin, several of us are slavering, giddy disciples of all things Dave Eggers. For some of us it goes back to dearly departed Might, the sharply witty pop culture magazine he published in the mid '90s; for others it was A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, his semi-autobiographical novel. Chances are that no matter where or when you first discovered Eggers' sly, hilariously annotated prose, you're also a big fan of his literary magazine McSweeney's. It's usually the coolest looking object in the magazine rack.

All of this is the long way of offering congratulations to Shann Ferch, chair of the Doctoral Program in Leadership Studies at G.U., whose short story "The Great Divide" will be published in the next issue of McSweeney's. Ferch, also a big star at Hoopfest each June, will read from his story in San Francisco tonight (Nov. 20); the new issue of McSweeney's will be available at Auntie's and Borders later this month.

Keep the Curtain Up -- Lake City Playhouse, the only community theater in Kootenai County, has been producing plays for 40 years.

Unless a few wallets open, however, the shows may not go on. LCP has an immediate need for donations, sponsors and advertisers.

You can help by attending a Fund-Raising Rally this Sunday, Nov. 23, from 10 am-1 pm. The kids can have their pictures taken with Santa while the adults tour the theater and watch the set for Miracle on 34th Street being built. From 3-5 pm, the Lake City Harmonizers will entertain as you enjoy wine, hors d'oeuvres, a silent auction and raffles.

Why Not the White House? -- The U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C., will be graced this holiday season, for the first time ever, by a tree from Idaho. The Speaker of the House will light the tree sometime in early December, but you'll have a chance to see this "perfect Engelman spruce" (from Boise National Forest) this Saturday, Nov. 22, at 1 pm at the Third Street parking lot near the Coeur d'Alene Resort. Go Jim! -- Big congratulations to Jim Boyd and Kyo-T for winning yet another Nammy (Native American Music Award) this weekend in New Mexico. Boyd won "Record of the Year" last year for AlterNATIVES; this year he walked away with "Best Pop/Rock Recording" for Jim Boyd and Kyo-T: Live!
