by Inlander Staff & r & & r & Spokane Plays Its Part & r & "I got a letter in my dressing room in Spokane last week," began Hal Holbrook's anecdote, told to a CBS-TV audience during Sunday's Tony Awards. (Holbrook had recently delivered a performance at Northern Quest Casino of his one-man Mark Twain show, which he has been performing for 52 years.) Seems a Twain aficionado had made a pilgrimage to the great writer's grave in Elmira, N.Y, but had gotten lost. A native Elmiran pointed out the way, and then added helpfully: "You know that old actor who played Twain for years? I believe he's buried up there, too."
Which of course was Holbrook's cue: "So now, at last, I can also say that the report of my death has been grossly exaggerated."

Homemade Sticky Geysers & r & If you listen to public radio and have fond memories of bottle rockets, you've already checked out the NPR video. For the rest of you: Buy yourself a two-liter bottle of Diet Coke and a package of Mentos. Put a bunch of the white oval mints into the bottle -- and then stand well back, because you're about to witness a carbonated Old Faithful. Turns out that it's nothing to do with the ingredients: Bubbles attach themselves to rough Mento surfaces and then cause vertical explosions impressive enough to make any fifth-grader insist on particular brands of soda pop and candy.
