FIRST NIGHT PICKS





KIDS NIGHT





Festivities for kids will be back under one roof this year. Kids' Night Out organizers roamed the globe to find the biggest holiday celebrations, so children will explore the seven continents -- yes, even Antarctica has a holiday -- through crafts and artistic traditions. Some highlights:





Heritage Day, celebrated in almost all the countries of Africa, honors the diversity of African traditions. Children will make African-inspired drums, masks and jewelry.





At the Asia venue, children can make Chinese yoyos, dragon masks, Japanese origami and samurai hats to ring in the Chinese and Japanese New Years.





Kids will make their own English crackers -- that's the pull-apart kind filled with candy and charms -- to be "cracked" open on New Year's Day.

Kid's Night Out runs 3pm to 5:30pm at the New Convention Center








11TH HOUR





"Well Jekyl had his Hyde / and Frankenstein his bride / and I fear I've become the two combined." Truer words were never spoken (though wouldn't that be "three combined?"), but just who spoke them will be up to you to find out. This'll be fun, like a rock scavenger hunt: one of the bands in this year's stacked Eleventh Hour teen par-tay penned those words, then threw them over a more or less pop-punky bed. It's up to you to find them. The pop punk mention doesn't give anything away, because even rock opera revivalists Vax Lavala have a bit of Green Dayishness in them.





Unison, the North Idaho Christ Wavers, kick the event off at 7pm, followed by If You're Lucky, each playing half-hour sets. Small Town Nation, the aforementioned Vax Lavala, and Man of Action roundout the locals. The event is headlined by Portland's Auralust.

Eleventh Hour runs from 7pm to midnight at the new Convention Center








GET LIT





Duck in from the rabble and the noise outside with an evening of fiction and poetry in this scaled-back version of Get Lit!, the great literary blowout held each year in April. Though not as star-studded as the spring affair, the First Night edition still boasts some of the finer writers in the region. (Notably absent, however, is this year's National Book Award contender, Jess Walter.) Highlights include Willow Springs editor Sam Ligon, fiction writer and bluegrass fiddler Greg Spatz, and a pair of Gonzaga poets in Tod Marshall and Grace Danborn.





Stick around for the "Mystery Reader" at 10:30 pm. We're not sure if this is going to be somebody reading a mystery story, or just an as-yet-unnamed local reader. Or both. Either way, we're crossing our fingers that it'll be Lee Majors. That guy can make anything sound good.
