The Washington State Attorney General's Office is hosting a free legal clinic in Spokane this week for veterans and active military personnel to help with issues like family law, drivers license restoration and basic will writing.
To qualify for the clinic's services, potential clients must be military personnel or veterans who live or are stationed in Washington state, as well as have income that is at or below 400 percent of the federal poverty level. Additionally, the clinic will strictly service clients with civil legal issues, not criminal matters.
The clinic will be open from 3-6 pm on Friday, Oct. 25, at the Spokane County Regional Veteran Services Center at 1117 N. Evergreen Rd. in Spokane Valley. Capacity is limited and services are by appointment only. Potential clients are encouraged to call the Attorney General's Office of Military and Veteran Legal Assistance at (206) 464-6431. The project stems from legislation passed in 2017, at the request of Attorney General Bob Ferguson, that created the Office of Military and Veteran Legal Assistance, and allowed the division to actively recruit and train volunteer attorneys to participate in the pro bono programs. The office serves as a "one-stop shop for legal assistance and pro bono services provided by community organizations and private attorneys," per a 2017 news release. The office has already held several similar free legal clinics throughout the state this year.
"Too many of our veterans have significant legal needs but cannot afford counsel — which is why we're trying to help," Ferguson says in an Oct. 21 news release. "I am committed to supporting those who have served our country. A special thanks to the members of the Washington legal community stepping up to volunteer their time to make this clinic a success."
