CCX Unveiled -- Anxious to see what Spokane's new architectural jewel is going to look like? The Public Facilities District is inviting the public to come view the conceptual design for the convention center expansion at its meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 2 pm in the Arena's Champions room. The $70 million construction project is expected to get underway in the summer of 2004 and will be located primarily to the east of the existing facility. Many cities pull out all the stops in the designs of their convention centers, as they offer a chance to make a kind of community statement. And, keep in mind, they are designed to stand out, as they must compete with other convention centers.
Reality TV -- Maybe we missed the memo, but when did it become OK for the TV news to show people being shot? If you've tuned in to any channel lately, chances are you've seen the crazy video of the guy shooting an attorney as he tries to hide behind a tree. I guess in this age of America's Funniest Home Videos, we've become accustomed to just about anything beaming into our homes. Of course, show blood from the war in Iraq on the evening news and you'll be run out of the news biz. But if it's an attorney -- now that's gold, pure gold. Can somebody explain this to us?
Hang a Right on Boone -- A few weeks back, we couldn't help but notice an event at Gonzaga University called something like "Why the Left Hates America." Hmmm, we thought -- oh well, college is a place to be exposed to new ideas, even if they are dumb. End of story, we thought.
Until this week, when we got a notice for another GU campus event, this time with Robert "Buzz" Patterson, author of something called Dereliction of Duty: The Eyewitness Account of How Bill Clinton Compromised America's National Security. OK, it's sponsored by the campus Republican club, but are we seeing a trend here? Sure, Rush says Clinton is to blame for just about everything wrong with America, but what's next? Nutty Right Wing Theories 101 as a requirement for graduation?
Sports and Politics -- If candidates doorbelled Saturday, they may have thought the city was empty. After all, that was the day of the WSU vs. USC game, and people may not have wanted to answer the door. Maybe it's a coincidence, but the two guys who won on Tuesday -- Jim West and Dennis Hession -- had TV ads on during the big game.
