Mary Verner's tenure as Spokane mayor might be coming to a close, but it seems it will end with a bang. After failing to show at a city press conference, Verner announced yesterday that she will ask the US Justice Department to launch a full federal investigation of the Spokane Police Department. Councilman Bob Apple told the Spokesman-Review, "We should have done it a long time ago." (SR)
After arguing unsuccessfully that death by lethal injection is cruel and unusual punishment, Paul Ezra Rhoades will be executed on Friday for a 1987 sexual assault, kidnapping and double murder. The controversial execution will be the state of Idaho's first in 17 years. (KREM)
Gonzaga basketball fans will be chanting a new name this season: Pangos. Freshman Kevin Pangos kept the Zags ahead last night against longtime rivals Washington State by hitting nine three-pointers. The Zags — in front of 6,000 fans and ESPN — took the win, 89-81. (SR)
On second thought, the US Postal Service has decided to keep operations running after all in the downtown Spokane office on Riverside Avenue. In August, a decision to vacate the 102-year-old building was announced. Well, good. We always liked going there. (SR)

More suspected victims are emerging since the arrest of ex-Penn State football coach, Jerry Sandusky. In an interview with Bob Costas, Sandusky said he was no pedophile, but he "shouldn't have showered with those kids." (NYT)
Two months after beginning an occupation of a Financial District park, New York police evicted Occupy Wall Street protesters early this morning, arresting 70 in the process. Protesters are regrouping on a nearby street corner. (Reuters)
Just halfway through November, some are calling this month the bloodiest in the Syrian uprising. At least 90 were killed yesterday, chalking this month's death toll up to over 300. (CBS News)
