EARLY AFTERNOON BRIEFING: MLK here and elsewhere

AROUND HERE

The Martin Luther King Jr. March goes off without a hitch, and — after the near-tragedy of last year (ABC) — with a considerable amount of fanfare.

(For an overview of Dr. King's ideas, Internet generation, see photo at right.)

There was no violence, and though police presence was heightened, it was all background to the spirit of the day.

Topics of Ivan Bush's annual speach:

  • Overcoming prejudice
  • Coming together as a community, regardless of race
  • Not living in fear
  • Ensuring economic equality
Most notably and sadly: this will be Ivan Bush and Rev. Happy Watkins' last year leading the march. Bush urged young people to step up — not just carrying the torch but injecting fresh ideas and perspectives.
