Rear View Mirror

You were looking in your rear view mirror at me as I trailed behind you in my Jetta. Your car looked a bit beat up, & the look in your eyes suggested you felt the same. I looked busy, like I was going somewhere important, but all I could feel was failure. I didn't give away any signals of connection & neither did you, but I know we both felt it. Bonded together in our loneliness and longing for some comfort. I followed you for over a mile and then got in the other lane and was next to you at the stop light. I looked over at you briefly and as you turned your head to do the same I looked away. My heart skipped a beat as I imagined looking back at you, our eyes meeting and your rugged face looking into my soul. But I didn't look back, and neither did you. Instead, you turned at the next street & I looked in my rear view mirror as you disappeared into sight. I saw you, I see you.
