The Spokane City Council will tonight consider raising garbage rates and reconsider a recently passed increase to water rates.
Two ordinances pertaining to garbage rates would increase rates for home pickup and for delivery to the city dump.
The rate increase is part of an annual evaluation of the city's utility rates, says councilman Jon Snyder. However, whether the garbage rates in the city increase depends on whether or not the tipping fee for use of the city dump is increased as well, he says.
Council President Joe Shogan has also introduced an ordinance that would allow the city to reconsider a recent increase in water rates.
The ordinance is in response to "several hundred or more complaints from citizens who don't understand the rationale behind the amounts of their most recent water bills," Shogan says in a statement. That ordinance will be considered at a later time.
Finally, an ordinance by councilman Richard Rush that would allow council members to voluntarily lower their salary by up to three percent will receive its first reading.
The Spokane City Council will meet tonight at 6 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.
