Tip a Cop

Usually, that'd get you arrested for attempted bribery. But not this Saturday at your local Red Robin (from noon-8 pm). Give that attractive server an extra gratuity, because it'll benefit Special Olympics Washington. Just don't ask the nice officer to fix any parking tickets.

Saving Private Stories

After our cover story last week about World War II, we heard from the folks at American Legion Post 14 in Coeur d'Alene who have begun the Inland Northwest Veterans History Project. Post Commander Michael Adams says the project's goal is to collect 100 videotaped interviews of veterans, family members and civilians who worked in support of the war effort. (On PBS, Ken Burns' The War , which continues through Oct. 2, has been demonstrating just how powerful such interviews can be.) The interviews will be sent to the Library of Congress to become part of the national Veterans History Project. The project seeks volunteers to conduct interviews and veterans willing to share their stories. Call the Legion at (208) 664-2250 or contact Adams at (208) 664-4322.

Eat, Drink, Be Local

Well, sort of local. We traveled last Saturday to downtown Wenatchee's first-ever Taste of the Harvest festival, a celebration of local food and wine producers anchored by the 10 wineries of the Columbia River Wine Country growers' group. The party continued at Saint Laurent Winery in Malaga, Wash., on Sunday with a delicious meal made entirely of locally grown products. It's all part of the growing awareness of sustainable agriculture practices -- and the incredible flavors of locally grown food and wine.

Chefs Do Too Love Babies

You've got to eat, right? Well, head over to the Davenport on Friday, Sept. 28, at 6:30 pm for the March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction and dinner, and you can benefit mothers and babies while sampling the favorite dishes of nine of Spokane's top chefs. Moxie's Ian Wingate leads the effort, joined by chefs Jim Wolters of Manito Country Club, Alexa Wilson of Wild Sage, Noel Macapagal of RAW, and more. OK, it's $150 -- but you're helping babies. Call 328-1920.
