Washington was one of three states where poverty increased from 2012 to 2013, according to Census data released yesterday. During that period, the poverty rate rose from 13.5 percent to 14.1 percent, or roughly 52,000 additional people. As the Washington State Budget and Policy Center notes, that's one in seven people earning less than $19,530 for a family of three. Medium household income in Washington ($58,405), meanwhile, didn't budge.
The two other states where poverty increased were New Jersey (10.8 percent to 11.4 percent) and New Mexico (20.8 percent to 21.9 percent).
