High comedy, new art and theater openings and one-night cooking class

Life is getting back to normal after the holiday bluster, and that means it's a great time to peruse our event listings and Staff Picks to help plan your weekend.

No time to scroll? Here are a few highlights for Friday, Jan. 9:

COMEDY | It's a big night at the Knitting Factory, where stoner comic Doug Benson is headlining a show. Read our interview with the host of Doug Loves Movies and Getting Doug with High, and get ready to laugh.

VISUAL ARTS | If you're heading toward Coeur d'Alene tonight, it's a fine opportunity to check out a new show by artist Harold Balazs at the Art Spirit Gallery. The artist reception starts at 5 pm, or go see Old & New between today and Feb. 7.

THEATER | Also in CdA, the Modern Theater is opening The Last Five Years, a musical love/breakup story that's already a hit off-Broadway, and slated for a Hollywood film treatment starring Anna Kendrick that opens in February.

FOOD & DRINK | Dying for Thai, but not willing to spend all your money at restaurants? Consider the Thai-ing to Cook class cost a one-time investment that will bring you pleasure forever. A one-night class tonight will get you savvy in two classic Thai dishes in no time.
