Death Cab for Cutie rides into Spokane this October

Last year, one of the founding members of Bellingham's own indie-rock band Death Cab For Cutie, Chris Walla, left the band after 17 years. But the group vowed to continue on. Now as a three-piece, the band has more than made good on that promise, delivering an emotional new album, Kintsugi, and announcing a nearly year-long world tour — which rolls through the INB Performing Arts Center October 1.

Death Cab For Cutie doesn’t come to Spokane often. They were last here back in 2009 for an awesome Gonzaga University show that included Cold War Kids and Ra Ra Riot. (Although frontman Ben Gibbard was here back in 2013, with his side project the Postal Service).

On tour, DCFC’s openers will include the Antlers, Built to Spill (a band that's majorly influenced DCFC), Best Coast and Explosions in the Sky. Unfortunately, none of these bands will be at the INB Performing Arts Center.

The Spokane stop is the last show before DCFC heads to Seattle for a three-night stint, two of which are already sold out. The tickets for the Spokane show go on sale officially Friday. But for you big fans out there, check out the pre-sale on their website here. Tickets are $35, or $40 at the door.

The band’s recent Tiny Desk Concert for NPR is required watching. The simplistic instrumentation allows the depth and brevity of Gibbard’s voice to shine through. Also, tell me the second song “No Room in Frame,” isn’t a thinly veiled story of Gibbard’s divorce from Zooey Deschanel. And of course, for anyone who went through high school listening to this band while driving in cars with friends, “Passenger Seat” will give you chills. Hopefully, their upcoming Spokane set will include an acoustic portion.
