THIS WEEK: Metal and folk tunes, poetry and bird-watching strolls

With the long Memorial Day weekend just a few days away, you can get some good-time momentum going by delving into the opportunities in our event listings and Staff Picks.

Monday, May 23

COMEDY | The Big Dipper hosts another night of Drink & Debate, when local comics, you know, drink and debate hot topics ranging from the personal to the political to the downright stupid. 

Tuesday, May 24

WORDS | Head over to Spark to take part in the I AM A TOWN poetry project, led by Spokane poet laureate Laura Read, in which locals try to capture the spirit of our town with a few lines. 

Wednesday, May 25

LIVE MUSIC | The Lowest Pair are Kendl Winter and Palmer T. Lee, and together they make harmonies laced with a backdrop of banjo and acoustic guitar. They're celebrating the release of two new albums with this show. Locals Prairie War open the show at The Bartlett. Here's a sample of The Lowest Pair's style:
 
VISUAL ARTS | Get into some diminutive fine art at the Spokane Artist Trading Card Swap at Boots Bakery. 

Thursday, May 26

THEATER | The Modern Theater in Spokane continues its run of The Ladies Foursome, a talkie comedy revolving around four ladies and a round of golf. 

LIVE BANDS | Anvil was well on their way to being metal legends when bad luck and questionable decisions got in the way. The Canadian band's journey made for a great documentary, and now they're playing The Pin!, along with Unleash the Archers and Graveshadow. Here's a sample from their early years: 

Friday, May 27

KIDS | If you have kids you're interested in turning on to theater, consider CTY Presents' production of Suessical, the whimsical dive into everyone's favorite children's author. 

Saturday, May 28

SPORTS & OUTDOORS | Get up early and head to Cheney for the Spring Colors Bird Walk at the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, starting at 8 am and led by Spokane Audubon Society member Marian Frobe.
