Music festivals are living, breathing things. They grow, expand, change, mature and (sometimes) are killed off in epic disasters (see: Ja Rule’s ill-fated Fyre Festival). VOLUME, the Inlander-organized festival, began as a one-night-only block party in 2012, driven by a small group of passionate artists and venue owners. Six years later, it’s expanded its footprint to what it is now: a two-day festival, with 100 acts performing at downtown clubs and one outdoor stage — a showcase of up-and-coming talent as well as established icons like this year’s headliner, Built to Spill.
At its heart, however, the thinking behind Volume remains: “the music festival for all,” an affordable and accessible weekend highlighting the Inland Northwest’s growing creative community. In that way, then, it turns up the volume for us all. (JACOB H. FRIES)
