Re: “Former police Chief Frank Straub files lawsuit against Mayor David Condon and his administration

It seems like an FOI petition would give us all a look at the terms and conditions of the Straub contract with the city. I was and remain under the impression that this chief was appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the City Council. There is no doubt it was the mayor who drove & strongly supported the hire decision over the objection of at least one advisory group. Lots of questions have resulted. The story may ebb and flow for a long time. But the deal, the contract, signed between Straub and the city, is locked in as far as this specific deal is concerned. We citizens should also be able to read and determine for ourselves whether we are going to have to (ultimately) pay for this lawsuit or not. And whether we have been well represented or not. Now and going forward.

Re: “ESPN ranks Gonzaga's John Stockton as No. 3 point guard of all time

Past polls had Stocks at number one. The two people considered "possibly" better back then were Magic and Bob Cousy. Both those gentlemen said at different times that they considered Stocks the best point guard in the history of the NBA.

So here we are and there you go.

Re: “A New Home

SO this joint will wind up being either a first stop, or a last, since very few students I've seen stop at three of anything, except, perhaps, leaves of kale.

Re: “City council has conditions for mystery downtown retailer

I think whoever wants that space should be given first position for a set period of time, say 3-6 months. After that time, the retailer's competitor(s) will be contracted to see if they are interested in that same space. That way, there's a possibility that one or the other -- or someone else -- will figure out how to work with the owners of the extra property they want: the citizens. And the citizens can have a little space to see if we actually want that retailer or even want to give up the space.

Re: “Meet the guy who's giving away thousands of dollars in cash to the homeless in Spokane

This gentlemen has every right to give away money any way he likes. But the underlying assumption is he is doing something and others are not. Hogwash.

I think it's also cruel and unwarranted to identify him and his past record, too.

That said, I would challenge this gentleman, who says he understands finances, to compare the benefit of handing cash out to folks on the street vs. giving the same amount of money to meals on wheels, the House of Charity or any charities that feed, clothe and provide beds to the homeless of Spokane.

The House of Charity housed over 70,000 people last year. Second Harvest has fed hundreds of thousands of people year round. It goes on. Simply, randomly, handing out cash should certainly be this man's prerogative and also go without condemnation. But to suggest it is more or even as helpful as other ways of donating to help the poor, does not stand any reasonable test.
