Re: “Taking Stock

I think the time has passed, or at least I hope so, when people believe that when a priest or bishops says something that makes it true. Having worked for 10 years at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes for a priest who seemed to think that if he said "Let there be light," there would be light. Catholic clergy are far from infallible, as is their pope in most things.
Sexual abuse by clergy is hardly a thing of the past! It is probably happening at this very moment someplace hidden from the cameras: and it will continue until the people demand a thorough housecleaning until someone outside the institution has full access to clergy personnel records (including those of bishops and cardinals), until states lift the archaic criminal and civil statute of limitations on child sexual assault, and legislate a two or three window of justice for those criminally assaulted even decades ago--so they legally come forward and identify countless priests, deacons, bishops, nuns and seminarians the church has been protecting.
If this refuses to even look for and identify perpetrators, how can he say there are none? The church has obviously failed in policing itself, so it is high time someone else take over.
