Re: “Don't Test Me

The students get absolutely nothing out of this test but a label. What is the point of having students take a test they will never see the results of beyond a numerical grade? They will never know what they got right and what they got wrong. Feedback is an essential part of the learning process. Students get none of that from this test. Even the practice tests which are available at http://sbac.portal.airast.org/practice-test/ have no feedback element to help them improve. How can this be acceptable? And the money it costs. $27 per child from something that is not a learning experience. As a society we need to rethink the notion of standardized tests. They don't create anything. They don't accomplish anything. They're just hoops to jump through, expensive hoops. The state even requires students with developmental disabilities to take this test. Talk about absurd. The federal government, which requires these tests in order to dispense federal money, will use these tests to label students and schools as failing. The same government over-regulation that is bad for businesses, is bad for education as well.
