Thursday Matinee Movie Classics: Jacob the Liar (Jakob der Lügnar) 1974

Jacob the Liar, a comedy/drama/crime movie, is the only East German film (a GDR-Czech production) to be nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. In a Jewish ghetto in central Europe, 1944, Jakob Heym eavesdrops on a German radio broadcast announcing the Soviet Army is making steady progress towards central Europe. He tells a companion and word spreads. Suddenly, there is new hope and something to live for - and so Jakob finds himself in the uncomfortable position of having to come up with more and more stories. Introduced by Sean Higgins, co-host of KSPS television's Saturday Night Cinema.
