Blessed Are the Diverse & r & Staying with the percussive theme... drum circlists pitched a fit last year when they looked at the lineup of their beloved Bonaroo Festival (held every June on a farm in Tennessee) and found a conspicuous lack of Trey Anastasio and the band known for being the surviving members of the Grateful Dead. Sure, Dave headlined, but so did Modest Mouse. Oh, the patchouli stink that raised, friends. Still, 80,000 tickets sold -- so this year, they went even less jam-bandy, branching out to every conceivable genre, relevant and otherwise. For every Rusted Root, you trustafarians will have to sit through the likes of Radiohead, Matisyahu, Dungen, Bonnie Raitt, Amadou and Mariam, Rebirth Brass Band and Shooter Jennings. Organizers apparently tried to go even more inclusive than this, but calls to Mozart and Coltrane were not returned.





Another reason... & r & ...to buy the Elliot Smith tribute To Elliot From Portland (in stores as of Tuesday) -- as if you scar tissue farmers needed one -- is that it's chock full of super-dope Portland bands that haven't had time to start sucking. Sure, Helio Sequence sucked out of the gate, and everybody knows about the Decemberists, but the likes of Sean Croghan, We Are Telephone and Society of People of Ambience and Elegance are hip and respectfully request your time. It'd be rude of you to decline. As a bonus, you get to hear the Thermals punk Elliot up and Lifesavas hip-hop him ... down? Whatever, buy it.
