George Floyd Protest in Spokane on May 31 and June 1

A couple of thousand protesters gathered at Riverfront Park and marched to the county courthouse and Public Safety Building in Spokane today to protest the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin held his knee on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, of which he was non-responsive for 2 minutes and 43 seconds, according to officials in Minnesota. Chauvin has since been taken into custody and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Three other officers, who were also present at the scene and fired from the jobs along with Chauvin, have not been charged as of yet. The protest in Spokane was one of many protests across the country since Floyd’s death on May 25.

UPDATE: The following day, June 1, about one hundred demonstrators gathered near the Big Red Wagon at Riverfront Park for a mostly peaceful protest. There were a couple of scuffles in the crowd and a confrontation with a man driving a truck who was passing by.
