Tim O'Brien's Vietnam novel, The Things They Carried — an interlocking series of stories based on O'Brien's own 1969-70 tour of duty — will be the centerpiece of Get Lit's presentation of a Big Read grant next March.
And best of all, O'Brien himself will appear as part of the literary festival, which has been granted $17K from the National Endowment of the Arts to promote readings and discussions of O'Brien's Vietnam ruminations, much as Spokane has rallied around To Kill a Mockingbird last year and The Maltese Falcon in 2007. EWU will present a theatrical adaptation of The Things They Carried in March 2011; there will also be film screenings and an opportunity for local citizens to record their own oral histories of the Vietnam conflict. And then, in mid-April, O'Brien will appear as the headliner at Get Lit!.
