Dempsey's closes, drag queens relocate

Posted on Tue, Nov 8, 2011 at 1:20 PM

According to a Facebook post Friday evening, Dempsey’s Brass Rail will be closed until further notice, due to owner Larry Brown’s health issues.

“It came as a surprise to all the people that work here,” says an employee who asked not to be named. “We found out Friday at noon that we would be closed until further notice.”

Approximately 12 employees and a half-dozen drag queens work at the popular downtown nightclub. According to the employee, Brown — a Spokane resident — is currently in the hospital in Hawaii and is unable to address his business affairs. Brown’s legal representative has yet to contact Dempsey’s general managers and employees.

Today, the drag queens are collecting the last of their belongings from what they called the “Drag Dungeon. ”According drag queen Nova Kaine, who we featured here (and who confirmed the closure), she and other queens will perform at Holly Rock Bar and Grill in Spokane Valley, and drag queens BlowMe and Bukkake will perform at the Spotlight Lounge.
